African-American
Ministry
In
the summer of 1937, Edmundite Fathers Francis M. Casey and John B.
Paro, came to Selma, Alabama and initiated an apostolate among
African Americans by going to where the need was greatest. There
began our Southern Missions, which led to other needy areas of
Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and Louisiana.
A significant part of our
apostolate is the exercise of Christ’s charity toward all the needy
with whom we have contact, regardless of race or religion. However,
we minister primarily in the African American community, especially
with those who are poor. We choose to live among and identify with
the people we serve.
In order to equip ourselves for
the task of African American ministry, we commit
ourselves to an ongoing formation and education in black theology
and ministry,
especially as conducted by the Institute of Black Catholic Studies
at Xavier
University of Louisiana.
