Our Mission
The Society of Saint Edmund is a clerical religious congregation of
pontifical rite whose priests and brothers, consecrated to follow
Jesus Christ, share a common life and profess the public vows of
chastity, poverty and obedience, and are dedicated to the works of
the apostolate.
Our essential mission is evangelization, helping people realize they
are the people of God. We do this by the way we live our common life
and our apostolic works flow from this commitment and from our life
of prayer and contemplation.
In our particular apostolic endeavors, we seek to deepen the
participation of people in the life of the Church. We seek to build
up the Christian community through means not otherwise provided by
the local church and to minister to those who would otherwise have
no one to minister to them.
The principal works of our apostolate are African American ministry,
Catholic education, spiritual renewal and pastoral ministry. Our
apostolic activities are unified through our commitment to the
Church’s preferential option for the poor and our promotion of
social justice.
We seek to serve as Jesus did, and to make known the love of His
Sacred Heart for all. We revere this instruction from our early
rule: "Our love must extend to all and in some way embrace all. The
needy, the poor, the ignorant and the sinners need to experience our
love more than others do."
